The Bedroom: How to Furnish It for Better Sleep and Real Order

The Bedroom: How to Furnish It for Better Sleep and Real Order

You spend a third of your life in the bedroom, yet it's usually the last room to be furnished properly — a bed bought in a hurry, an inherited wardrobe, two nightstands that have nothing to do with each other. The result: a room where you sleep, but don't rest. Here's how to build it step by step, with real dimensions and without the mistakes we see every week.

Start with the mattress — not the bed

The simplest rule, and the one our clients are most surprised by: choose the mattress first, then have the bed made. A quality mattress comes in exact sizes (160 × 200 cm is the most requested standard for couples; 90 × 200 for children), and the bed should fit it to the millimetre — not the other way round. With a made-to-measure bed this happens automatically; if you buy off the shelf, measure the mattress before you sign.

Circulation space: the numbers that don't forgive

  • Leave at least 60 cm of walking space on each side of the bed you get up from — 70–75 cm is more comfortable.
  • In front of a hinged-door wardrobe you need about 90 cm of clear space; sliding doors need only 60 cm — which is why we recommend sliding doors in narrow rooms.
  • From the foot of the bed to the wall or facing furniture: a minimum of 70 cm so you can pass without turning sideways.

If these numbers don't work out, the answer isn't to give up the wardrobe — it's to design the room as one whole, where each piece takes exactly the space it needs.

The wardrobe: floor to ceiling, always

The space above a classic 240 cm wardrobe is where dust and old bags collect. A fitted wardrobe running to the ceiling gains you 60–80 cm of extra storage — enough for an entire winter season — and makes the room feel taller. Inside, plan around what you actually own: two hanging rails (high and low) hold twice the shirts of one; drawers with dividers keep small things findable; a sloped attic corner becomes a bank of low drawers instead of dead space.

The storage bed: a second floor for our apartments

In Albanian apartments where every metre counts, a lift-up bed is probably the most practical investment in the whole room: under a 160 × 200 cm mattress hide more than 700 litres of storage — duvets, suitcases, next season's clothes. Modern mechanisms lift with one hand and close silently. The simpler alternative: side drawers under the bed, which work even when one side of the bed sits against a wall.

Nightstands, dressing table and headboard

A nightstand should sit roughly at mattress height (about 45–60 cm from the floor) — lower forces you to bend down in the dark. When it's built together with the bed, the headboard can carry the lighting and sockets itself: two reading lights mounted on the headboard free up the nightstands and solve the dangling-cable problem once and for all. If you can, place the dressing table near the window — side-on natural light is the best light for a mirror.

Lighting and calm

A bedroom wants three layers of light: soft general lighting (not a hospital-grade ceiling light in the centre), reading lights with separate switches for each side, and a low orientation light for the night. Choose warm tones — around 2700K — so your body understands sleep is coming. The same principle applies to furniture colours: natural wood, sand tones and warm greys calm the room; matt surfaces don't bounce phone light at night the way gloss does. A well-chosen rug under the bed softens the room acoustically too.

The short checklist before you decide

  • Mattress first; the bed is made to fit it.
  • 60 cm of passage beside the bed, 90 cm in front of hinged doors.
  • Wardrobe to the ceiling — the space up high is the cheapest storage there is.
  • Lift-up bed or under-bed drawers if you're short on storage.
  • Warm lighting in three layers; separate switches per side.
  • All pieces in the same materials and finishes — the room breathes as one.

Design it as one whole

The real difference comes when the bed, wardrobe and nightstands are designed together — same materials, same considered dimensions, same lighting.
